Note: Derived from Georgian bottle cabinets or cellarettes, sugar chests
were a specialized form in regions of the Southern backcountry where,
before the advent of steamboats, sugar was imported from New Orleans
with difficulty. The presence of a sugar chest in a household signified
its prosperity, and regional cabinetmakers modified a familiar English
dining room form to store and display a prestigious commodity.

Furniture, pp. 73, 77, 89, and 138. Further discussion of the evolution
and use of the sugar chest can be found in: Mc Pherson, “Sugar Chests in

Arts, Winter 1997 and Hicks and Caldwell, “A Short History of the
Tennessee Sugar Chest”, Magazine Antiques, September 2003. |

chest form, known as the “Jackson Press “ was versatile in its use for
dining rooms and kitchens. Most closely associated with Tennessee
cabinet makers and named for local hero Andrew Jackson, the Jackson
Press was common in the vicinity of Jackson’s home: Davidson County,

ebonized and partial gilt frame. [$2000/3000]
Note: The second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Alfred was
created Duke of Edinburgh in 1866. In 1874 he married Grand-Duchess
Marie Alexandra, daughter of Czar Alexander II, at Saint Petersburg, and
the prince and princess’s children were born in the years bracketing
this sensitive portrait (painted probably either in Paris, while the
artist was in residence there in the 1870s, or in Washington—as
suggested by the stamp of a D.C. art supplier on the back of the
canvas—where the Prince may have been visiting the British Embassy).
Prince Alfred became Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1893, and died at
Coburg (distraught by the romantically induced suicide of his son and
namesake in 1899), in 1900. |
