Knowles, Providence, RI, 1875-1905, comprised of a coffee pot, teapot, sugar, creamer and waste bowl, each squat form with lobed rim, wide band of floral repoussé on punch ground, lobed lower body, flared foot rim, period monogram "AH" for Alice Herrick, coffee pot height 7 in., combined weight 76.95 troy ozs. $2000/3000
Provenance: Descended in the Herrick-Miles family, New OrleansNote: Alice Herrick was the daughter of New Orleans cotton broker, Richard Herrick.

A New Orleans Coin Silver Goblet, Küchler & Himmel for Hyde & Goodrich, c. 1852-1853, the bell-shaped bowl with beaded rim, chased acanthus leaves on punch ground, conforming stem, stepped foot with papyrus and leaf footrim, period script monogram "EHM" for Edward H. Miles (b. 1852), height 5 3/4 in., weight 5.30 troy ozs. $700/1000
Note: The goblets offered as lots 300 - 302 commemorate the births of the three sons of General William R. and Frances Mayrant Miles of Mileston, Mississippi, and New Orleans. During the Civil War, Miles commanded a Confederate regiment known as "Miles' Louisiana Legion" which fought at the Battles of Plains Store and Port Hudson.The New York Times, May 28, 1869, published excerpts from a letter General Miles wrote in support of ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment: "We want a Government, a good Government, the best Government we can get. We want the repose, and security and confidence that a State Government alone can give. Cannot the entire population, then, both white and black, unite upon common ground, and bring about this desired result?"

Provenance: Descended in the family of Confederate General William R. Miles of Mileston, Mississippi, and New Orleans. Son William R. Miles was born in 1848.

Provenance: Descended in the family of Confederate General William R. Miles of Mileston, Mississippi, and New Orleans. Second son, Theus Norvelle Miles, was born in 1850, and married Alice Herrick of New Orleans. They made their home in Alexandria, LA where Miles was a prominent cotton factor.
