.An Important American Carved Rosewood Bookcase, c. 1874, probably New York, in three parts, with fine allegorical carvings: the center crest with two seated classical maidens representing Knowledge flanking a carved urn, one with a quill and books, the other with a scroll;the left crest having a carved beehive flanked by fruit, grapes, and a sheath of wheat representing Industry and Bounty; the right crest with a ship's bow and anchor flanked by bound tobacco leaves and corn representing Commerce. The interior with maple-lined original shelves. The whole on serpentine molded plinth and later block feet. E4000-6000 An interior case side bears the following inscriptions: "George James Packed This Bookcase January 15th, 1874" and "Repacked by John ... Cabbo Vicksburg, Ms, October 18, 1879" and "Taken down and packed by G. Martin Jr. Shipment to Pass, March 27, 1902" and also found along this interior side is a green paper label of the Mitchell and Rammelsburg Furniture Co., Cincinnati, Oh, height 103in., width 109in., depth 22in. Commissioned by Mr. Eugene Martin, a Vicksburg Cotton Broker, listed in the 1880 Vicksburg City Directory. Thence by descent to the present owner, for many years the bookcase remained in the family summer home on the East Beach in Pass Christian, Ms.
