A Biedermeier Mahogany, Birch, Ebonized and Parcel Gilt Globustisch Work Table, c. 1820, Vienna, domed lid painted with signs of the zodiac, fitted interior with mirrored niche, thread spools, and secret drawers, banded inlaid waist, carved lion's mask supports ending in paw feet, incurvate plinth, height 36 in., diameter 16 in.
PLEASE NOTE: This globe-form worktable is a distinctive Biedermeier form with an emphasis on geometric purity, which required a very skilled cabinetmaker to produce. Another related example, purchased by Queen Charlotte as a birthday gift for Princess Augusta in 1810, is illustrated in Jourdain. Regency Furniture, fig. 152. Reference: Wilkie, Biedermeier, pp. 100 - 101, figs. 90 - 92.
