A Canton Famille Rose Porcelain "Eight Immortals" Oval Platter, early 20th c., the well finely enameled with a central bird-and-flower roundel encircled by the "Eight Immortals", four depicted in figural form and four represented by their attributes, gilt highlights throughout, height 2 in., length 17 in., width 14 1/2 in. Note: The "Eight Immortals", called pa hsien, were superior Taoist human spirits who achieved immortality and were believed to know the secrets of nature. They are represented as male, female, old, young, rich, poor, noble and humble, and are distinguished by their respective emblems, which they are never without.
