A Chinese Blue and White Porcelain 'Animals of the Zodiac' Bottle Vase, 19th c., pear form body with tapering neck raised on a short circular foot, decorated with a continuous landscape scene incorporating the twelve animals of the zodiac set amid trees, grasses, and rockwork, the dragon depicted encircling the neck partially obscured by ruyi clouds, base with four character Kangxi mark, height 10 in. Note: Shallow chip to rim.

Note: The Chinese Zodiac is a twelve year cycle in which each year is associated with an animal: rat, ox, tiger, hare, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. These twelve animals are associated with the Twelve Earthly Branches, which, together with the Ten Heavenly Stems, form a numbering system used to calculate the sixty year cycle in the Chinese lunar calendar.
