Lot 77
Description:
A Chinese Carved Glass Snuff Bottle, 1780-1850, glass simulating hematite, rounded rectangular form, carved to one side with two badgers beneath a towering pine with a bat flying overhead, stopper, height 3 1/8 in.
- Notes: Note: The homophone huan in Chinese means both "badger" and "happiness", hence a pair (shuang) of badgers in Chinese art represents "double happiness" (shuangxi), the Chinese symbols of conjugal bliss. In Chinese iconography the bat is symbolic of happiness and the pine tree of longevity. Reference: Welch, Patricia Bjaaland, Chinese Art: A Guide to Motifs and Visual Imagery, p. 111.
