Description:

A Chinese "Nanking Cargo" Blue and White Porcelain Bowl, c. 1750, the exterior sides painted with a continuous landscape scene comprised of rocks and trees, base with a Christie's Amsterdam lot label designating this bowl as lot 3014 from the 1986 "The Nanking Cargo" auction, height 3 1/4 in., diameter 7 1/2 in., wood stand.
PLEASE NOTE: In 1751, while on its way back to The Netherlands with cargo of Chinese goods loaded in Canton, the Geldermalsen hit a reef and sank in the South China Sea. In 1986, much of the cargo was salvaged by Captain Michael Hatcher and subsequently sold at Christie's Amsterdam as "The Nanking Cargo", a term derived from 18th century auctions in which porcelain similar to the example above were sold as "Nanking ware".
