Description:

A Chitimacha Indian Basket, late 19th c., St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, squared bottom, shallow bowl form with circular lip, of woven red, black and natural tone wild river cane, in the "birdseye pattern", attributed to Delphine or Faye Stouff, height 3.75in., diameter 7.5in E800/1200 Note: Although tribes of Chitimachan stock were located along the lower Bayou Teche and Grand Lake, and at several points along Bayou Lafourche, the Chitimacha proper, (possibly united by a single chief), occupied two groups of villages, those on the lower Teche and on Grand Lake, and along upper Bayou Lafourche. The section occupied by the Chitimacha is notable for its complex network of waterways. Ref.: Louisiana Indians 12000 Years, Louisiana State Museum, New Orleans, 1966, p. 22
