Description:

A Continental Neoclassical Carved Mahogany Sofa, c. 1835, the arched crest rail with quatrefoil piercings, wide scroll arms terminating in rosettes, paired crouching lion feet, blocked base, height 38 1/2 in., width 79 in., depth 23 in. Interestingly, the restrained Gothic decoration on lot 155 compliments the Classicism of the form more than the Rococo flourishes commonly seen on similar examples. Note: A German mahogany sofa of similar form to lot 155 is illustrated in Payne, 19th c. European Furniture, p. 352, pl. 1041
