A Dogon Relief Carved Wood and Iron Door, Mali, three rectangular panels strapped together to form one shutter, the flanking sides with male and female figures in high relief, height 69 in., width 20 1/2 in., supported on a metal stand.
- Provenance: Provenance: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Note: The Dogon are noted for their art forms, complex religious beliefs, and picturesque huts and granaries. A striking feature of Dogon architecture is their shutters and doors which are carved with ancestral figures to protect those which reside inside. These ancestral figures are often representations of the Nommo, the Dogon people's primordial ancestors.
