A Fine American Carved Mahogany Center Table, c. 1840, attributed to J. and J. W. Meeks, New York, serpentine "Egyptian" marble top on conforming skirt with finely carved shells, stretcher with rosette, on distinctive U scrolled feet, brass casters, height 31 in., width 45 in., depth 24 in. Reference: Cooper, Classical Taste in America, pp. 216-217, pl. 173. Note: A labeled mahogany pier table by Meeks in the Dr. Dubs Townhouse (Natchez, Mississippi) has distinctive U-scroll feet identical to those on this lot.
