Lot 214
Description:
A Fine American Carved Walnut Banquet Table, mid-19th c., finely carved and molded top, with eight original leaves, quadripartite pedestal support with torch appliqués, carved dolphins, raised on massive paw feet.
- Notes: Note: The large and fully articulated dolphins on this table are a Classical motif presented in a Renaissance scale. Alexander Roux is the most likely New York cabinetmaker to incorporate the bold and finely executed zoomorphic imagery as seen within the design of this banquet table. Reference: Well known Roux examples with full figural carvings include the walnut server by Roux with hound supports at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (acc. 1995.15); a walnut sideboard with a stag head crest at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1993.168), amongst others.
