Description:

A Fine American Classical Mahogany and Burled Ash Pier Table, c. 1820 Philadelphia, the original rectangular white marble top above a frieze with gilt bronze mount of floral design; the burled columns fitted with engine-turned capitals and bases, the rectangular mirror plate flanked by pilasters, the concave plinth raised on reeded melon turned feet, retaining an old surface, height 35 1/2, width 46 1/2, depth 21in. E6000-8000 Note: Several prominent early 19th c. Philadelphia cabinetmakers used burled ash, elm and maple to lighten the preponderance of mahogany in various classically inspired forms. The use of light burl veneers, gilt bronze mounts and French Restauration forms in this example relates to work by Joseph B. Barry Reference: for an illustration of a table by Barry see David Hanks, "Gothic Revival Furniture in Philadelphia" The Magazine Antiques, May 1976, page 1024.
