A Fine American Classical Mahogany Gentleman's Chest in the Gothic Taste, c. 1830-40, the scalloped trapezoidal superstructure with side opening cupboards and head molded panels with small drawer below, supporting a mirror, above a marble fronted molded trapezoidal base, the molded top drawer above graduated drawers flanked by tapering pilasters with "S" scrolls at the lower edge, on a deeply molded blocked base, height 43in. depth 24in. E3500-4500 Note: This rare dressing bureau is related to the work of Philadelphia furniture maker Crawford Riddell. The architectonic design and Classical Gothicism in this chest bespeaks a cabinetmaker well-versed in the vocabularies of both Classical and Gothic styles such as Riddell, who is best known for a bedroom suite sommissioned for Rosedown Plantation See Katherine Howe and David Warren, The Gothic Style in America 1830 1870, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, p. 52, for an illustration and discussion of the Riddell bed.
