  • Literature: Reference: Examples from the Jenkins workshop include a desk exhibited by the Maryland Historical Society (1993), illustrated in Weidman. Classical Maryland p. 136, then sold by Neal Auction Co. as lot 395 on December 6, 2003. An example attributed to Needles in the Maryland Historical Society (acc. 62.83.1) and illustrated in Weidman. Furniture in Maryland 1740-1940, p. 142, pl. 102. Another related Baltimore secretary was sold in these rooms as lot 411 on February 23, 2008. The Blake piano forte ad reproduced in Cooper. Classical Taste in America 1800-1840. p. 264, pl. 213. Quervelle example illustrated in Smith. "Quervelle Furniture at Rosedown," Magazine Antiques. (May 2001) p. 772, pl. VI.
  • Notes: Note: The verticality of the elements in this desk, as well as the open lower case with free standing front supports are qualities often seen in desks by Baltimore cabinet-makers Anthony Jenkins and John Needles. This form also relates to upright piano fortes offered by Baltimore and Philadelphia cabinet-makers of the period. A trade advertisement from George E. Blake (Philadelphia, active 1817-1824) shows a piano with tall-stenciled case and carved front legs related to those seen here. The high style lozenge panels on the drawers of the desk offered here relate to those on a well-known desk and bookcase made by Anthon Quervelle, now at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
