Description:

A Fine American Federal Mahogany Campeche Chair, c. 1800-1825, probably Philadelphia, shaped crest, scrolled flat arms, shepherd's crook supports, curule legs connected by turned stretcher, in a fine state of preservation, height 40 in. Note: Thomas Jefferson's use of this typically Louisiana and Caribbean seating form in furnishings at Monticello gave impetus for the campeche chair's production in Philadelphia and New York. An inlaid Philadelphia campeche chair with shaped arms, curule base and turned stretchers very similar to those seen on lot 503 belonged to Benjamin Franklin's great grandson, Franklin Bache (1792-1864) and is illustrated in Trione, "The Campeche Chair in the Metropolitan Museum of Art" Metropolitan Museum Journal, 2003, p. 202, p. 38.
