Description:

A Fine American Federal Mahogany Gentleman's Secretaire, c. 1810, New York, probably Duncan Phyfe, the rectangular top with outset and rounded corners over fluted and reeded stiles flanking two short drawers over a fallfront escritoire drawer fitted with satinwood interior, pair of paneled cabinet doors, tapering reeded legs, brass paw feet, back bearing old E. Roseman, Philadelphia shipping label, height 49 in., width 48 in., depth 23 in. Note: The sophisticated juxtaposition of fluting and reeding on the stiles and finely terminating front and back legs with brass paw feet, are seen in the work of Duncan Phyfe. A similar reeded tapering leg with a paw foot appears on a bedstead made by Phyfe for James Lefferts Brinckerhoff, illustrated in Jeanne Vibert Stone, 'A Duncan Phyfe Bill and the Furniture it Documents', The Magazine Antiques, May 1987, p. 1110, fig 5. Phyfe examples incorporating similar brass paw feet include a side chair belonging to Mrs. Wm. Minturn, two chairs belonging to Thomas Pearsall, and a sideboard of Mrs. Thomas Pearsall, all illustrated in Nancy McClelland, Duncan Phyfe and the English Regency, p. 285, pl. 272; p. 289, pl. 276; p. 271, pl. 279.
