A Fine American Federal Satinwood Inlaid Mahogany Tambour Desk, c. 1800, Massachusetts, the superstructure with two drawers and tambour doors opening to drawers and compartments, centered by a prospect door with Federal shield, eagle and stars, bookmatched satinwood surround, foldover writing surface, four graduated paneled drawers, shaped apron, bracket feet, height 49 1/4 in., width 39 3/4 in.,
- Provenance: Provenance: Descended in a Connecticut Family to heirs in Mississippi. Note: The tambour form of this desk is among the most fashionable produced in Massachusetts in the late 18th and early 19th c. The fine contrasting veneers and eagle inlay adorning this desk are similar to a number of known examples including a desk signed by Ruben Swift (New Bedford, active 1802-1820) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 62.171.6) and a desk bearing the Ginsburg and Levy label sold by Skinner¹s, Boston, as lot 528, on November 5, 2006.
