A Fine American Gilt Bronze Four Arm Camphene Chandelier, c. 1850, possibly by Michael Boyd Dyott, Philadelphia, grape and grapeleaf corona, cast foliate and ring-form chains, central fluted support, ornate bowl issuing scrolled branch fitted with pear-shaped fonts retaining original four prong camphene burners, wicks and extinguishing covers intact, each font with matched period blown, cut and etched shades with ruffled rims, height 37 in., diameter 36 in.
- Notes: Note: As solar lighting gained widespread use and popularity with 19th century Americans, numerous new patented burners and fuels were introduced. Michael B. Dyott of Philadelphia was issued a patent in 1840 for a camphene burner and advertised various types of camphene lamps. This example can be used today with conventional lamp oil.
