A Fine American Gothic Carved Walnut Hall Mirror and Stand, mid-19th c., Philadelphia, the complex crest with pierced tracery pediment flanked by crocketed finials above an arched mirrored back, pierced side panels, intricately carved pilasters and columns; a marble top above the base with recessed side drawers, the front with blind fretwork and foliate roundelle, raised on turned supports, with low molded shelf and ending in bracket feet, height 100 in., width 45 in. depth 20 in. E5000-7000 Note: The coherent Philadelphia style and specificity of various carved ornaments incorporated in this stand seems to bespeak the work of Daniel Pabst. The Gothicized Eastlake design of this hallstand relates to a Pabst tall clock, illus. pg. 37 Nineteenth Century Furniture Innovation, Revival and Reform, intro. Madigan, as well as the well-known walnut sideboard illus. fig. 15, pg 19, in the Bulletin of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, April, 1977, which features a Gothic carved upper case, and a three-piece Gothic bedroom suite made by Pabst for his daughter Emma, now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, has a related architectonic aspect to this mirrored hallstand, lot 643.
