A Fine American Gothic Highly Figured Mahogany Secretary Bookcase, c 1840-1850, New York, possibly John and Joseph W Meeks, flat cove molding over a pair of glazed Gothic doors and maple shelves, the desk section with folding flap and fitted birdseye maple interior, pair of solid Gothic paneled doors below, bracketed feet, height 93 1/2in.., width 43in., depth 24in.[ E5000 7500 Note: Overall, the sense of Gothicism employed in this desk relates to the desk illustrated in The Gothic Revival Style in America, 1830-1870, pi. 82 pg. 46 The Meeks firm frequently varied close forms by usage of rosewood or mahogany, by complexity of moldings, carving, details, etc. This desk, lot #568, also relates to the Howe and Warren desk byvirtue of the contrast between exterior mahogany or rosewood and finely grained maple or satinwood interior, as well as the distinctive wavy beading used in lieu of other moldings.
