A Fine American Highly Carved and Ornamented Mahogany Sideboard, late 19th c., attributed to Pottier and Stymus, New York, the rectangular case with bowed front surmounted by a molded top above a row of frieze drawers, the locks patented by 'G. Bayer ...', with anthemion chains and patinated bronze pulls, gadrooned borders and clusters flanking the central case containing panelled doors with alternating similar stylized foliate and vegetal forms, set on square molded base height 39.75in., width 98 in., depth 32 in. Note: A report from the 1876 Philadelphia Exhibition states that Pottier and Stymus tracked each article made with a four or five digit number (see Kristin Herron, 'The Modern Gothic Furniture of Pottier and Stymus', The Magazine Antiques, May 1999, p. 765). This sideboard, lot_.is inscribed with the number '15171' on the backs of all the drawers, and also the cabinet.
