A Fine American Innovative Cast Iron Armchair, mid-19th c., foliate crest, the shaped back beautifully stencilled and painted, padded arms with scrolled supports, spring steel rocker mechanism, casters.

  • Provenance: Provenance: Strong Museum, Rochester, New York. Note: The spring device on the base of this chair was first used for railcar seating and later incorporated into parlor and office furniture, such as the example seen here. This chair is nearly identical to a c. 1853 armchair by the American Chair Co. conserved by the New York State Museum. The crest and arms on this lot are also identical to those on a c. 1849 spring base chair also by American Chair Co., illustrated in Hanks, Innovative Furniture in America from 1800 to the Present, p. 127, fig. 101. Reference: Scherer. New York Furniture at the New York State Museum, p. 98, pl. 96.
