A Fine American Late Classical Carved Mahogany Armoire in the Gothic Taste, c. 1835, attributed to J. and J.W. Meeks, New York, having a massive flared cornice with an inset arched frieze, arched paneled doors with bookmatched flame veneers, flanked by full columns raised on a molded base with flared blocked feet, height 96 in., width 75 in , depth 31 in. E5000-7000 Note: The inset arched cornice, turned capitals and trapezoidal feet in lot 689 are very similar to those seen in known Meeks examples including an armoire featured in the published Meeks broadside. These elements were also present i n a secretary bookcase attributed to Meeks sold in these room as lot 427, June 2, 2001 Reference: the broadside is illustrated in Voorsanger and Howat, Art and the Empire City, p. 517.
