Lot 404
A Fine American Late Classical Figured Mahogany Armoire, c. 1830, New York, the arched cornice above a pair of doors with beveled Gothic panels opening to sliding shelves and flanked by columns on scroll plinths; the sides with beveled wardrobe doors; massive scroll feet; penciled inscription, interior, height 92 in., width 65 1/2 in., depth 29 in. E8000-12000 Note: The arched cornice and Gothic paneled doors flanked by columns on lot 404 are very similar to those in item 28 illustrated in the well known broadside advertisement from J. and J. W Meeks. The use of a brass molding between the doors, the details on all the door panels and the presence of the side wardrobe compartments place this armoire in the top tier of the documented work from the Meeks firm, and calls to mind the cabinets of Duncan Phyfe.
