Description:

A Fine American Late Classical Mahogany Sleigh Bed, c. 1830, attributed to Duncan Phyfe, New York, scrolled head and foot, inverted bow rails, plinth feet, finely figured veneers throughout, height 43 in., length 78 in., interior width 60 in. Note: The finely figured veneers, sophisticated rail terminal, and precise construction of this bed are indicative of the workshop of Duncan Phyfe. A méridienne ordered from Phyfe by Samuel Foot in 1837 and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a well documented example of Phyfe's Restauration period and shares many attributes with the lot offered here.
