Lot 281
A Fine American Neo-Grec Inlaid, Ebonized, Porcelain-Mounted, Burlwood and Rosewood Center Table, late 19th c., attributed to Pottier and Stymus, New York, the blocked D end top inset with finely polychrome, inlaid grotesques surrounding a representation of Aesop's fable of 'The Fox and the Crane", and lateral cartouches with avian motifs; conforming skirt inset with "Sevres" plaques of court ladies; the elaborate turned legs joined by an incurvate stretcher with anthemion ends, a reticulated lyre centered by an urn, on stylized bun feet, height 30 in., width 52 in., depth 30 1/2 in. E14000-18000 Provenance: From a New York estate, found in situ with lot 280. Note: The use of an elaborate pierced stretcher, bun-form foot terminals and a porcelain plaque on the skirt in lot 281 can also be seen in a high- style Egyptian Revival rosewood table by Pottier and Stymus conserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A Neo-Grec table attributed to Pottier and Stymus from the Lyndhurst Corporation Collection also employs an elaborate stretcher and porcelain plaques on the skirt in the manner of those in lot 281.
