Description:

A Fine American Neo-Grec Rosewood and Marquetry Sofa, c. 1865, attributed to Herter Brothers, New York, the padded back joined by padded arms, the supports inlaid with classical urns distinguished in contrasting woods, and with gilt stop-fluting, the seat rail bordered in palmettes, on turned legs with compressed capitals, retaining original casters, original surface, height 34 in., width 72 in., depth 32 in. E6000-9000 Note: The legs and inlaid seat rail on this sofa relate to two known Herter Bros. chairs. One conserved by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and illustrated in Nineteenth Century America, plate 165, the other illustrated in Herter Brothers Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age, Exhibition no. 10, collections of the St. Louis Museum of Art. The later is thought to be original to the music room of Elm Park, the Legrand Lockwood residence, Norwalk, Conn. Each has a fine flower motif band on the seat rail executed in light and dark contrasting woods. This feature, the fluting and legs are consistent with other documented Herter furniture.
