Lot 131
A Fine American or Continental Rococo Revival Carved Rosewood Escritoire, mid-19th c., the tiered superstructure with central mirror, reticulated panels, two serpentine cupboards with drawers and a central folio slot; the desk with outset brass-inlaid candle stands and two short drawers flanking a long drawer, cabriole legs, toupie feet, height 53 1/2 in., width 56 in., depth 29 1/2 in. Note: This distinctive desk is a remarkable example of the Rococo Revival style with origins in Louis Philippe France and transmitted through Europe and the United States. The style was an excellent vehicle for the display of master carving work of immigrant cabinet makers such as John Henry Belter and Alexander Roux. The use of fretwork panels in this piece is similar to examples from the New York shops of Belter and J. & J.W. Meeks.
