A Fine American Renaissance Inlaid and Ebonized Rosewood and Gilt Bronze Mounted Credenza, late 19th c., attributed to Alexander Roux, New York, the stepped top with incurvate sides, over a cabinet mounted with finely painted porcelain plaques representing Michelangelo, Raphael and a Classical maiden, the panels inlaid with cattails and wheat sheaves, the corners with birds, satinwood-lined interior of scalloped shelves, raised on a stepped blocked base with bracket feet, in fine original condition, height 54 in., width 69.5in. depth 18 in. Note: The gilt bronze mounts on the stile capitals used in this example are identical to those used on a stamped cabinet by Alexander Roux, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (see Tracy and Johnson 19th c. America, Furniture and Other Decorative Arts, pl. 164) and also found on another Roux cabinet at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute (see D'Ambrosio, Masterpieces of American Furniture from the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, p. 107).
