A Fine American Renaissance Inlaid, Bronze-Mounted, Ebonized and Gilded Rosewood Cabinet, c. 1870, Philadelphia, the crest centered by a roundel with a Classical bust, arched pediment with anthemia, blocked central cabinet with a bronze bust of a female goddess, door panel inlaid with bird and ewer trophée flanked by columns, the side cabinets with arched pediments centered by bronze plaques, canted corners supported by colonnettes, the doors inlaid with musical trophées, conforming plinth, shaped feet, retains an attractive old surface, height 67 3/4 in., width 65 1/2 in., depth 20 in.
- Notes: Note: The incorporation of various Egyptian forms, such as the lotus-carved columns and winged amulet crest on this cabinet, is indicative of the renewed European and American interest in Egyptian monuments during and directly after the construction of the Suez Canal, which opened in 1869 to connect the Mediterranean with the Red Sea. The juxtaposition of tightly inlaid panels with bold architectonic elements xecuted with exotic inlays, ebonization and gilt incising seen on this cabinet may be found in important works from Allen and Brother, Philadelphia, including a cabinet attributed to Allen and Brother from the collection of Fredrick W. Hughes. Reference: Talbott. "Allen and Brother, Philadelphia Furniture Makers," Magazine Antiques, (May 1996), p. 717, pl. 2.
