Description:

A Fine American Renaissance Mahogany Cabinet Bookcase, c. 1870-1885, Philadelphia, probably by A.H. LeJambre, the later white marble top above a foliate-carved frieze, the broken architectural front containing three glazed doors, the proper right interior fitted with three drawers, the locks stamped Shannon, Philadelphia; the panels decorated with repetitive coin motifs, on a molded conforming plinth, height 50 in., width 71 in., depth 23 in. E3000/4000 Note: The firm of Alphonse and Henri Lejambre (1867-1907) was part of a small but important colony of French born and trained immigrant cabinetmakers influential in the development of the furniture trade in Philadelphia in the 19th century. Their work ranges in style from the late Rococo to the Aesthetic. Their earlier work is solid and dignified and can be categorized as in the French Antique style, while their later pieces display innovative designs. (See In Pursuit of Beauty, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, figures 5.16 and 5.17, page 159) The design of this architectural bookcase with its interior drawers stems from the English Reform Movement, while the ornamentation is taken from French Renaissance sources. Three related pieces have sold in these sales rooms: a rosewood armoire, lot 563, October 1997; a cherrywood dressing table, lot 547, April 1995; and a stylish clock with near matching panels, lot 520, June 1994. For more on Lejambre see The Magazine Antiques, March 1978, Furniture by the Lejambre Family of Philadelphia by Peter L.L. Strickland.
