A Fine American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Sofa, mid-19th c., attributed to John Henry Belter, New York, in the pattern known as "Tuthill King", tall reticulated C and S scroll crest surmounted by elaborate flower-filled cornucopiae above grapevines, acorns, leaves and flowering branches, continuous arms, serpentine floral carved seat rail, floral and acanthus cabriole legs, height 47 in., width 86 in., depth 23 in.
- Notes: Note: The "Tuthill King" pattern, one of the Belter firm's more complex and high style patterns, is named after a suite now conserved by the Chicago Historical Society from the King family home on South Michigan Avenue. According to family lore, the suite was saved from the Great Chicago Fire which consumed the King residence. A rosewood sofa attributed to J.H. Belter, also in the "Tuthill King" pattern is illustrated in Dubrow, American Furniture of the 19th c., p. 123 and is nearly identical to this lot.
