Description:

A Fine American Rococo Carved Mahogany Armoire, mid-19th c., possibly the workshop of Alexander Roux, New York, arched cornice with foliate crest flanked by lobed finials, molded mirrored door, canted corners, stepped plinth base, scrolled feet, height 91 1/2 in., width 48 in., depth 26 in.
Note: The elaborate carved cartouche, sophisticated chamfered stiles and modified Roman feet on this armoire are all elements related to known works from Alexander Roux. The use of a single door with a mirror in this armoire is indicative of the preferred French mode for the form.
Similar French Rococo elements can be seen in a parlor cabinet conserved by the Metropolitan museum www.metmuseum.org.
