Lot 326
Description:
A Fine American Rococo Carved Rosewood Center Table, c. 1850-1860, New York, serpentine marble top, the skirt with clusters of flowers, seed pods and vines, raised on flower and fruit-carved cabriole legs connected by a large floral-carved tazza, fitted with casters, height 30 1/2 in., width 42 in., depth 30 in.
- Notes: Note: The incorporation of very specific and symmetrical rococo highly carved motifs found throughout this center table may be easily associated with the John Henry Belter workshop. The general understanding of known Belter tables should cite several forms, i.e. those with laminated skirts (also used by John and Joseph W. Meeks), the Belter table related to the well-known example found at Rosalie, Natchez, MS. and a group of Belter less highly carved tables that have rather plain skirts. The table offered here, lot 326, is distinctive in that the upper oak skirt frame follows Belter's work, the carving almost duplicates Belter elements and most especially the branch vine molding of the center skirt and each end of this table.
