Description:

A Fine American Rosewood, Rosewood Grained, Gilt Stenciled and Giltwood Work Table, c. 1825, probably Deming & Bulkley, New York, rectangular top fitted with a recessed work slide, two graduated drawers, retains original reeded work basket within four scroll supports; the whole on four downswept carved legs and paw feet, brass casters, height 29 in., width 21 in., depth 16 in.

  • Provenance: Provenance : The Estate of Ruth Hart Eddy, sold at auction October 1-2, 1971; subsequently to a noted antiquarian. Note: Deming and Bulkley wares featured elaborate carving and exotic wood veneers to appeal to a luxury market; the prolific gilding on this work table is also indicative of the Deming and Bulkley firm, whose output often exhibited a well-executed combination of freehand and stencilled applications. Established in New York by cousins Brazilia Deming and Erastus Bulkley, the firm also operated successful warerooms in Charleston, South Carolina, through the 1840s.
