A Fine American Walnut Desk and Bookcase, c. 1840-1850, labeled "Manufactured by William McCracken, No. 45 Royal Street, New Orleans" on interior backboard, the ogee step molded cornice over double trifold gothic arched glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves over pigeonholes and a document compartment; the base with hinged fold out desk with baize lining and pen and ink compartments, the conforming cupboard doors enclosing a shelf raised on ogee bracket feet, height 33 in., width 55 in., depth 29 in. (open). E12000-18000 Note: Old paper reading "Butler" on rear of backboard indicates an early family ownership. Note: For an interesting discussion on William McCracken, see The Magazine Antiques May 1997 "The Nineteenth Century Furniture Trade in New Orleans", by Stephen Harrison, p. 748-749. Two related Gothic desk and bookcases, may be noted in The Gothic Revival Style in America 1830-1870 by Katherine S. Howe and David B. Warren, item 82 and 83. The similar quatrefoil arched glazed doors and distinctive feet relate to this McCracken example.
