A Fine and Important Labeled American Late Classical Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase, mid-19th c., J. & J.W. Meeks, New York, broken pediment center section flanked by arched bonnets, glazed doors with satinwood interiors; the lower case with four oval paneled doors containing figured veneers opening to fitted linen drawers over a conforming plinth, height 107 in., width 86 in., depth 25 in. E25000- 40000 Note: The Meeks firm operated at the 14 Vesey Street location in New York between 1836 and 1850. A labeled Meeks secretary with comparable satinwood interior is in the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The "Chippendale" Rococo carved pediment on this bookcase indicates that Meeks worked from the most sophisticated design sources available.
