A Fine and Rare American Renaissance Carved, Ebonized and Burl Walnut Parlor Cabinet, c. 1870, attributed to Allen & Brother, Philadelphia, superstructure with a gadrooned pediment, rectangular door centered with the bust of a maiden carved in high relief and lion head brackets; lower case with blocked front, female terms and frieze drawer, the door with foliate-carved and beribboned reserve containing a lyre-incised panel, two acroteria wells flanking conforming plinth with egg and dart molding, height 65 1/2 in., width 60 in., depth 25 in.

  • Notes: Note: The distinctive carved terms and the bold juxtaposition of gilt, ebonization and robustly carved and burled figural decoration on this cabinet are indicative of work attributed to Allen and Brother, including an Allen center table in the Judith Hollander collection, seat furniture in the Berke collection and a cabinet sold in these rooms as lot 109, October 11, 2008 William Allen Sr., a purveyor of exotic woods and furniture, was succeeded by sons William Jr. and Joseph, in the Allen workshop at 137 Walnut Street, Philadelphia in 1847 By 1869 Joseph partnered with another Allen brother, James, and Allen and Brother solidified a reputation for fine goods and custom cabinet work.
