A Fine and Rare American Rococo Laminated and Carved Rosewood Sofa, c. 1850-60, New York, the right rear leg branded 'J.H. Belter- Cabinet Maker 1372 Broadway/New York", the triple-arch crest with applied floral-carved surmounts, reticulated with a centered shell, trailing oak leaves and acorns and a floral basket on either side, downswept carved arms, serpentine seat, on heavily carved legs, height 49 1/2in., width 88in. E25000-40000 Note: The fluted, protruding arm supports and high relief carving on the center leg of the present sofa relate to similar details on "Cornucopia" pattern sofas one illustrated in Dubrow and Dubrow, American Furniture of the 19th Century, pg. 123 and on a sofa of an unnamed pattern illustrated in Schwartz, Stanek and True, The Furniture of John Henry Belter and the Rococo e v pg. 63, fig. 37 The brand on this sofa was discovered when its darkened and crazed original surface was cleaned. It is interesting to note that extant Belter brands found on beds and dressing bureaus utilize a slightly different script with serif, and give the patent date of 'Aug. 19, 1856" ibid, pg. 82, fig. 59
