Description:

A Fine and Rare China Trade Painting, c. 1830, oil on canvas, depicting a group of elegantly dressed Chinese women playing 'Wei Ch'i' with their attendants present, the richly detailed interior setting overlooking an extensive walled-in garden complete with potted plants and trees. Though unsigned, the painting is clearly the work of a highly accomplished artist of the time. Visible craquelure to surface, 18 in. x 24 in., with a carved Chinese fretwork frame. Note: Though typically the images of China Trade paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries are of port scenes, given the Western fascination with the Chinese way of life, some of the China Trade artists lent their hands to interior and landscape paintings. These paintings often depicted tea drinking, card and board game playing or garden parties. Interiors regularly displayed Chinese art, furniture and decorative objects. Garden depictions included pavilions, terraces, pools, bridges and examples, unusual by Western standards, of the Chinese tradition of potting plants and shrubbery.
