A Fine Architectonic Continental Mahogany Fall Front Desk of Romantic Inspiration, c 1840, surmounted by a cabinet in the form of a Baroque domed temple with patinated figures of soldiers flanking the pedimented and canted frieze above a fall front desk opening to an elaborately fitted interior with Gothic compartments and a painted landscape, above three drawers and flanked by Corinthian columns on a conforming plinth, the whole with book-matched veneers, height 88.5 in., width 56.5 in., depth 30in E8000-12000 Note: The monumental proportions and master cabinetry seen in this desk are not only indicative of the importance of its original owner, the unified iconography further elevates the significance of the piece The two figures of soldiers above the pediment are a juxtaposition of one in Roman and the other in Germanic dress Likewise, the finely executed architectural miniatures are the contrast of a Classical rotunda above and a Gothic interior within This pairing of the Latinate/Ancient with the Germanic/Gothic could reflect a 19th c German Romantic interest in a national identity that is also both Roman in law and Gothic in piety.
