Description:

A Fine Continental Carved Marble Urn and Pedestal, early 19th c., the beaded egg and dart lip over a band of vintage decoration and a bas relief Bacchanalian frieze, lobed bowl mounted with carved satyr masques over the fluted spreading foot and square plinth, on a variegated gray marble column with a white marble collar and square plinth base, height 61 1/2 in., diameter 20 in.

  • Notes: Note: Designed after the strikingly similar 1st c. B.C. kylix known as the Borghese Vase, now conserved in the Louvre, the present lot features the same everted, beaded egg and dart lip, vintage rinceau, lobed bowl, satyr masks, and fluted spreading foot. The traditional Bacchic procession of Maenads and Satyrs encircles the body of the vase, alluding to the urn's original purpose.
