A Fine Continental Rococo Kingwood and Inlaid Marquetry Sedan Chair, early 19th c., the arched hood above shaped glass paneled windows, the door with vertical sliding window and foliate bronze molding, the wood panels with classical incised marquetry motifs, the interior with padded arm rests and seat in antique burgundy upholstery, ending in scrolled feet, height 66in., width 28 in.., depth 29in. E4000-5000 Note: The sedan chair originated in India or China. The design was brought to Europe with the establishment of trade routes and quickly came into vogue in France and Italy. The 18th century sedan chair was part of the pomp and display of royal ceremonies as well as a distinctive way to travel. One can be found on display at the Museo Nationale di Capodimonte and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and are often seen in hallways of great English country houses. This example (lot #573) incorporates the richness of woods, ormolu trim, luxurious interior and graceful design reserved for public display or the discerning collector.
