  • Literature: Reference: Symonds, et. al. Victorian Furniture, pp. 194-201.
  • Notes: Note: Originating in Parisian decorative arts, papier-mâché appears as a decorative material in England in the mid-18th century. With a 1772 English patent for molding sheet paper, rather than pulp paper, Henry Clay paved the way for his 19th century successors such as Jennens and Bettridge to produce larger, very durable and luxurious papier-mâché furniture at modest production costs. The mother-of-pearl inlay, used for good effect in the chair here, changes with the light as the viewer crosses the room.
