A Fine First Empire Gilt Carved Mahogany Grecian Side Chair, early 19th c., the reeded crest with papyrus carved frieze, feather and leaf carved stiles, deep seat rail accented with bellflowers and rosettes, retaining a tall slip seat, turned tapered legs with foliate cuffs, sabre legs to the rear, in a fine state of preservation E2000-3000 Note: The form of this chair derives from the thinner, well-figured frames made popular in the late Directoire and persisting through much of the Early Empire, with subtle variation to the design of supports, backs, and the choice of applique decoration employed This chair incorporates features from many of the fine examples produced during the period such as the scroll back, with sturdy rounded legs of the heavier variety, and carved wood moldings and appliques of rosettes, chains of lotus buds, anthemia, and scrolls Similar examples are present in the extensive collections of Fontainebleau.
