Lot 198
A Fine French Ebonized, Gilt Bronze-Mounted and Porcelain Jardinière, late 19th c., attributed to Gabriel Viardot, in the Japonesque taste, the lift top and stretcher shelf inset with colorful avian Longwy tiles, pierced case and skirt over carved legs with gilt bronze dragon mounts, on outswept hoof feet, height 33 1/2 in., width 26 1/2 in., depth 18 1/8 in.
PLEASE NOTE: The finely modeled edges of the reticulated elements and the dragon mounts on this jardinière are indicative of the Viardot atelier. The legs on this lot are identical to those on a jardinière and a side table by Viardot illustrated in Payne, 19th c. European Furniture, p. 78, pl. 116-118. Viardot exhibited at the Crystal Palace in 1851; the Paris Exhibitions of 1867, 1888, 1889 and 1900. A Viardot cabinet was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum. This jardinière retains a lid mounted with a colorful Longwy tile echoed by a second tile in the shelf below. When the jardinière has plantings installed, the lid can rest on spurs on the leg interiors, creating an additional shelf. Reference: A similar Viardot jardinière sold as lot 384, Christie's, London, South Kensington sale 5201, November 27, 2007.
