Description:

A Fine French Faïence Cup and Saucer, probably mid-18th c., Nevers (Nièvre), with well-painted light and dark-green monochrome floral décor ("camaieu vert"), both pieces marked with stylized comet, height of cup 3 1/8 in., diameter of saucer 5 in. Note: The apparition of a comet over France, in 1769 ("Méssier's Comet"), was recorded by the painters at the Royal Manufactory of Sèvres by a comet-shaped mark (W. Chaffers, Marks and Monograms, Los Angeles, 1946, p. 604); the unusual mark on these two pieces may possibly be related to that symbol. For the 17th c. Nevers prototypes to this décor and palette, see Grand Livre de la Faïence Française (Fribourg, 1986), p. 37, color pl. 15.
