A Fine Highly Carved Oak Nine Tube Tall Case Clock, late 19th c., Walter Durfee movement, case attributed to R.J. Horner, Co., New York, retailed by Tiffany & Co., the tubular bells, also marked by Durfee, play Whittington and Westminster chimes, the arched crest with griffins flanking a cabochon cartouche, acanthine frieze, the face flanked by full relief figures of "Father Time", the beveled glass door below with Seraph and female terms to the sides, the griffin base centered with a carved plaque of a Viking ship, on blocked feet, height 113 in. Note: Walter Durfee (1857-1939), an antiques dealer from Providence, Rhode Island, specialized in tall case clocks. In 1880 he started importing English bracket clocks with a partner under the name "Durfee and Enches". On his own in 1884, Durfee began to import tall case clocks, which became an instant success. In 1886, he secured the American rights and patent for tubular bell movements from the English firm Harrington. He controlled the American tall case clock market for almost two decades and is credited for reviving interest in tall case clocks in this country.
